“The state of Pará is located in the north of Brazil, and is part of the vast geographical and culture area known as Amazonia. The Portuguese colonizers never established in Pará the plantations or mining operations that required the huge labor force eventually supplied by captive Africans and the slave system. These were located mostly in the northeast and south of the country. At first, Indian slaves were used in the extractive enterprises in the Pará forests, with African labor brought as early as 1682 (Anaiza Vergolino e Silva, “Alguns Elementos para o Estudo do Negro na Amazonia, 1968, p.6) African slaves worked in domestic service in the capital, Belém of Pará...”

“El estado de Pará se localiza en el norte del Brasil y hace parte de la vasta área geográfica y cultural de la Amazonía. Los colonizadores portugueses nunca establecieron plantaciones u operaciones mineras en Pará que requirieran una amplia fuerza laboral eventualmente suplida por esclavos africanos. Aquellos proyectos fueron establecidos en el noreste y el sur del país principalmente. En primer lugar, los esclavos indios fueron usados para actividades extractivas en las selvas del Pará, y la fuerza de trabajo negra fue traída apenas en 1682 (Analiza Vergolino e Silva, “Alguns Elementos para o Estudo do Negro na Amazonia,’ 1968, p.6). Los esclavos africanos trabajaban como empleados domésticos en la capital. Belém do Pará o estaban concentrados hacia el este de la ciudad realizando trabajo agrícola...”
